I finally got around to watching the movie Spirit of the Game, about the Mormon Yankees. I was surprised to see the uniforms though - very tight shirts and even tighter tiny shorts. So I went hunting for photos of their original uniforms. It looks like they may have often worn tank tops/singlets at the time, although I did find one picture of shirts similar to the ones in the movie. What puzzled me was that the shirts in the movie were way tighter. And the shirts in the movie looked smaller and tighter than any real photo I could find?
Why am I obsessing over the uniform of the Mormon yankees? I did kind of wonder about how they decided on the uniforms for the movie.
But I have a bigger question now - are BYU athletes encouraged to wear or not wear their garments while playing and practicing? Some uniforms would make it impossible, but footballers for example could easily do it in terms of coverage (but probably not comfort). This is really just a random question that I wondered if anyone knew the answer to.
I could not even imagine missionaries today being allowed to run around looking like that!

Re: The Mormon yankees
I would often go the the fieldhouse at BYU to play basketball. I am not aware of anyone ever wearing garments while playing. Those shorts would not have allowed that. I would be very surprised to find any athletes wearing garments, even football. Way back in the 60 Minutes interview with President Hinckley, there was a small part with Steve Young. He mentioned that he did not wear garments when playing.
