Discussions toward a better understanding of LDS doctrine, history, and culture. Discussion of Christianity, religion, and faith in general is welcome.
So I am reading the God Delusion right now and I have decided I'd like to read a book that counters this and shows the positive side of religion/God/belief. I am a 6 on the Dawkins scale so this is not a book to convince ME to believe, this is a book for me to read so I can see religion/God (the abstract concept of religion/God) in a positive light.
Don't say the Bible. Reading the Bible is what turned me to Dawkins.
This is what the Dawkins scale is if you don't know.
I have not read Fowler's Stages yet, is that what I should read or is there a better idea? Thanks!
Even if it's something disappointing, it's still better to know the truth. Because people can deal with disappointment. And once they've done that, they can feel that they have really grown. And that can be such a good feeling. -Fred Rogers

But I really enjoyed that book.
I'm not sure of what would be an equivalent opposing view. Maybe something like Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis?
You'd have to foray into philosophy for an argument for the existence of God.
I like the version of God that Dawkins suggests might be a possibility--a highly-evolved creature that to us would be god-like.
Have not read Mere Christianity. I like C.S. Lewis and I really enjoyed The Screwtape Letters when I was a believer. I will see if it's available at the library next week. Thanks!

I never read Mere Christianity either. If you read it, please return and report.

The Last Superstition by Edward Felser. I read it a few years ago when I was grasping for ways to believe. It was an interesting read that convinced me that if there is a God, he/it is nothing like the Mormon God. I didn't like the polemical tone of the book, but he said he was trying to match the tone of the new athiests, which I still haven't read.
I think this is a good theistic companion to The God Delusion because it is a rational approach to religion, focused more on the practical value than literalistic interpretations.
