Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath

Post by Sheamus Moore »

I know the subject has come up but I'm entertained by the show and enjoy spotting similarities between Scientology and Mormonism (or other religions for that matter). IMO, the doctrine/business of Scientology is way, way off the reservation, even by LDS standards. But it's still fun to find parallels no matter how close or far apart they appear. I occasionally find myself turning to my DW and asking, "Sound familiar?"

Last nights episode titled 'The Business of Religion' dealt with (in a nutshell): money, promises made by the church, 'sales' tactics, contracts, subversives, the 'observations' of LRH. I found myself comparing their discussion to: tithing and temple participation, the price of salvation in the CK, missionary work, covenants, the 'observations' of JS, etc.

DW and I watched one episode of this and saw the same similarities you did.
We didn't watch more because it was painful to see what is happening to well meaning people and I tend to get riled up at the tv. :(

Seems like the leader of Scientology considers himself above the law. He also seems VERY mentally unstable....

Hunh....I wonder who that reminds me of?....

I watched pretty much all the episodes that are online for free. There were definitely disturbing parallels, but I think the crap that goes on in Scientology has to be waaaaaaay worse than the typical Mormon problems. Of course, maybe the stuff in Remini's show isn't typical of Scientology, either- it could be just a few extremely bad stories. Mormonism does have at least few extremely bad stories.

I think you're right about comparing today's Mormonism with today's Scientology. I see closer parallels between Miscavige's Scientology with Young's Mormonism.
