It's never a good time for someone's family member to pass away, thanks for just reporting this. I kind of liked Hales, pretty uncontroversial. Had some pretty strong medical challenges the last few years, too.

The announced it pretty quickly. Like within 45 minutes.

I might tune in to the final session to see if they say anything

I went to my parents last night for dinner. My dad tried to get a conversation going about how something momentous happened today. He was trying to be coy, but was rather put out when I already knew about it and completely destroyed his attempt at setup.

My epic is way better than his epic.

Thanks Guys!

I'm really wondering what your father hoped to accomplish with saying that "something momentous" happened today. Having Jesus talk at the pulpit would have been momentous. A new policy that changes the direction of the LDS church would also be pretty big. Announcing official plans to build a temple in Jerusalem or Adam-Ondi-Ahman would be pretty big.

Announcing that a kind, elderly man passed away quietly due to advanced age while surrounded by his family is a perfectly sweet story, but it's not really momentous. Having Hales appear as a glorified, angelic being would be momentous. Calling a woman to replace Hales would also be momentous. Announcing that a another old, conservative white guy from Utah is replacing Elder Hales is not momentous. That would be 100% expected and will be back page news at best in every market except Utah.

I feel l like I knew Hales the least of the big dogs. He was quiet (this is a good quality). I don't recall him having racist or anti gay views. Wouldn't if be nice if the whole Q15 were more like him?
