But why did the church start denying women the priesthood? there are no scriptures in the standard works (Bible, D&C, BoM, PoGP, ... ) that deny women the priesthood
If you read mormon enigma, the authors propose that the Relief Society was disbanded after Emma started rallying the women against polygamy, and even had them take an oath to uphold virtue. She advised them to follow what Joseph had taught in public (meaning ignore him if he says something different in private) and essentially gave the women a strong reason to say no to plural marriages. She was angry and was using rs to push back at what the men had been doing in secret.

As a result the relief society was disbanded and there was a great quote from Brigham young about not even allowing women to gather together. As usual he was not very complementary towards women and even less so towarda emma.

I don't know if this is relevant to the question but it seemed to me that this was the beginning of the end for any real power held by women in the church.

I vote to give poor Bruce a break. What do you expect from an ex Marine who went to law school and whose father in law was President of the Quorum of the 12 and whose father was the best known and most successful lawyer in the Morcor. You might have a swelled ego too .He certainly was dogmatic and self assured in his own rectitude and only rarely considered the possibility he might be wrong. I had lunch with him once and actually he was just as stiff and formal and unapproachable as you might guess. But he did engage in Mormon doctrine and theology in a way that we never see anymore. He and his father in law tried to "normalize " doctrine in a way their successors never even consider. I think he was wrong about a whole host of things but in his own blundering way at least he took doctrine seriously and didn't just say " follow the prophet" endlessly.

This is compounded by being the son-in-law of apostle Joseph Fielding Smith, grandson of Hyrum Smith. I suspect that serious theologians have no chance of joining the Quorum of Twelve Apostles any time soon. The PR department now has to give tacit, unintentional approval of new candidates rather than risk a new, 21st century version of "Mormon Doctrine" appearing. I think that Boyd Packer was the last gasp of CES instructors making it up to the apostles.
