My younger son graduated high school and that means he (and I) are emancipated! Of course, I'll be losing child support payments, but I can live with that. I can go out of town overnight and not have to make sure a responsible adult is in the house! I can take classes every freaking night of the week! I am no longer under legal mandate to read and answer my ex-husband's emails! I marked his latest one as spam! My children can do whatever they want and that's fine. I mean truly fine. No ramifications from the church or a judge or the police or anyone!

Oh good for you both! Is your son off to college? Our youngest just graduated yesterday as well and we're facing an empty nest. I have to admit I'm a little more trepidacious about it than you seem to be - but I don't have an ex-husband to get rid of.

He's going away to college. His older brother is, shall we say, unconventional. He's kind of broken me in on that. At first, I was worried, but I watched something recently that really helped me with that. I happened to watch it when my older son was literally half a world away on a volunteer vacation in a restless third world country. If you have Netflix, watch Three Musketeers from minutes 12:19 through 15:00. I was worried about my son, but that advice was incredibly well-timed for me.

The father tells his son to live his life boldly and courageously. The son now knows if he makes a mistake--and he will, because he's human--he can tell his father about the mistake he made. It let the son know the father trusted him to be a man. I ended up sharing this scene with my older son. I told him in his life he will make some good choices and good things will happen from those choices. And that's good. He'll also make some mistakes and he'll learn from those and that's also good. So, it's all good.

I plan to tell my younger same thing when I drop him off at the dorm. Then I'll go home and cry, really hard.

I can't recommend the rest of the film, it unfortunately has a lot of misogynistic drivel that's best left in the past.

The morning my oldest sister turned 18, my mom woke her early by flicking on the lights and wishing her a happy birthday. She then announced that she was no longer obligated to provide anything to her - but would only because she wanted to! Mom went on to do the same to my other sister and I on our 18th birthdays. It was a good lesson for us - we knew we had to learn to stand on our own feet as compared to some of our friends who were wholly supported by their parents before they were wholly supported by their husbands. It made us stronger and independent. (Well, 2/3 of us anyways!)

Good for you - you are giving your son the gift of independence and self-reliance which are amazing! And you are setting an example by following your dreams.
