The Holy Ghost, revelation, and Mormons.
Do other religions place as much emphasis on listening to the spirit for advice? I've heard 2 separate women in the last few weeks saying that they where prompted by the spirit to have another child.
I've had friends say that they had the spirit tell them they should avoid taking a certain road while traveling to and from a location.
Now it all seems just magical thinking to me.
Did Joseph smith start this emphasis in the church?
When I left the church I really had problems with my next child getting baptized. My tbm wife would ask about it and I would just say that I really wasn't wanting it to happen.
After talking to my exmo brother he made some good points that helped change my mind. So I had decided to go ahead and let happen. A short time later my wife asked about it again and I told her that I had changed my mind and that it would be ok.
About a year later I was talking to my wife's brother. He told me that my wife had a distinct voice tell her to ask me right then if (child) could get baptized. She shared the experience with her family.
I had already decided 2 weeks earlier to give the go ahead. It had been busy for me and I just hadn't got around to talking to her about it.
It's just so strange to me that people think they are being guided by some unseen entity whispering in a still small voice, or placing impressions on them of what course to take.
It's seriously just weird. I used to think that way to, but I don't think I took it so serious as other people.

You've seen the youtube videos about Holy the Ghost, right 20/20? In essence, yes, many other religions rely on a supposed unseen entity whispering to them...

( Edit: Actually the entire video is creepy looking in from the outside, but 10:00... [SHUDDER] Wait a second! Was that Holy the Ghost who caused that shudder? )

Does anyone remember the scene in National Lampoon's Animal House where freshman Larry Kroger had an angel and a devil sitting on his shoulder giving him some dating advice at a toga party? I think that was based on a thorough reading of the scriptures and several triple-espressos.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

That would be a good part to put in the temple movie.. maybe that's how Joseph smith got all wrapped up in his stuff. When you were a new missionary, didn't I take you to a Pentecostal meeting? I honestly can't remember. They certainly claim to be listening to the *spirit* when they are speaking in tongues.20/20hind wrote: ↑Mon Apr 03, 2017 9:16 am Do other religions place as much emphasis on listening to the spirit for advice? That speaking in tongue thing freaked me out just a little. Thankfully they weren't the snake handling sect of the Pentecostals. I hate snakes.
A Mormon mission in the bible belt is like a Pentecostal coming to utah to covert mormons. (Not happening) if it does its rare. After you went home most baptisms i had, they maybe came once or twice and then they where never seen again. The other ones where just plain nucken futs.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm hoping most (if not all) of my converts are inactive/left the church.20/20hind wrote: ↑Tue Apr 04, 2017 6:14 pmMan i totally forgot about that. I was an unwitting young missionary who was taught correlated church lessons since before i could walk. I didn't know. !
Stig, im rembering some good times when you trained me as a new missionary. I was homesick as a guy could be, but you kept us busy and that helped a lot. Never would have thought we would meet up on a board discussing our lack of belief after so many years later.

Shudder indeed! That one is a very cringe worthy slap in the face for an average TBM.

Re: The Holy Ghost, revelation, and Mormons.
The quick answer is yes.
But there has always been issues with "listening to the spirit". After all, how do you really know it is some sort of "divine transmission" to you? There is an inherent a danger in “hearing” things that God never said, and therefore some people seek the spirit for selfish reasons. They want the spirit to make their decisions for them, to tell them what job to take, if they should have a baby, which person to marry, when to move and how to live. They want the spirit to be like an astrologer or horoscope, to save them the trouble of thinking and making decisions. So, is it the spirit "speaking" to them, or is it really simply an internal affirmation of what they really want?
