You Can Keep Your Choir
You Can Keep Your Choir
So this weekend was the first time in twenty-five years that I didn't watch/hear Conference. I did hear about E Holland's talk, and decided to listen to it.
I like his sentiments. I like that he likes that he perceives there is room in the Church for all, including those with "differing sexual attractions". But I call BS.
His statement is not descriptive of the current Church. Perhaps it's aspirational. Either way, there is no way in h3ll that there is room for either singles or gay people. There is room for you if you get married (solving the problem of the treatment of singles) or pretend to be straight (solving the icky gay problem).
So I hesitate to cast cynicism on his otherwise wonderful talk. But it's important to face reality.

Re: You Can Keep Your Choir
He meant differing sexual attractions as in blondes vs. brunettes.
The church has accommodated differing sexual attractions by making different temple movies. One for men attracted to blonds. One for men attracted to brunettes.

"All are welcome in our choir"....(as long as you are willing to follow our conductor. If not, we may have to ask you to leave. A choir must sing with unity or cannot function as a choir) Perhaps, but life is not meant to be lived under the constant control of a conductor. Wasn't that satan's plan?

As I said in another thread, I'm not impressed. Talk is cheap. Until I see some real and substantive changes, I'm not putting any more stock in this than I do anything else he says.

The movie "Ratatouille" has a great moment where the critic ponders on the statement "Anyone can cook" and realizes that there are two meanings. The first is that _everyone_ can be a great chef, and the second is that a great chef can come from any circumstance.
That monologue keeps popping into my head while I think about the LDS church considering themselves "inclusive". It is a difference of the definition of that word.
If you define "inclusive" as a group that accepts you for who you are and do not try to change you, then the LDS church is not inclusive.
If you define "inclusive" as a group that will accept you no matter your background, then the LDS church is inclusive (with some exceptions).
So they say often that "we would love to have you", but that doesn't mean that anyone can be a Mormon, but that a Mormon can come from any circumstance (again, with exceptions). They can say that with a straight face, because to be a Mormon means a life change. You come as you are, and you change.
I still have a difficulty with the inclusive label, because even if I give them a tremendous amount of leeway on what a person can change, there are still circumstances outside of the control of a person where they are not welcome in the LDS church (children of a married gay couple, children of polygamists, etc.).

Re: You Can Keep Your Choir
Same here. But then I remembered that the choir taught me that I am "less than" because I'm a woman. I am less than because I'm a single mom. My kids are less than because they come from a broken home. My gay brothers and sister are less than because of the way they were born. They can say we have a place in the choir, but who wants a second-class citizen seat in the choir?

It's so hollow when JRH says gays have a place, but we all know "the choir" refuses to baptize their children or even bless their babies.

I'm only attracted to brunettes. There is only one way. It is a choice and the righteous of us have chosen to prefer brunettes. What if you're attracted to BOTH???
If you marry a blonde, I cannot support your counterfeit marriage.

Re: You Can Keep Your Choir
The Faithful Origins and Ontology League has seen fit to release an opinion statement regarding attraction to women of particular hair colours, and which types, if any, are sinful.
Our illustrious CEO, Jeremiah Zogdrass, has provided us access to the Proceedings of the Union of Lunar Territorial Governments, in which we have found an indictment of redheads by former Pastor of the Lunar Society of Friends and Representative of Mare Tranquilitatis to the ULTG, Freder Klofing:
"Red hair is a mark, set by God Himself upon the inhabitants of the [lunar] Equator, of choleric temperament, tendency toward and love for connivance, and general belligerency. I have therefore discouraged my congregation from associating with redheads, and have affixed severe punishments to interbreeding with them. We have, as a result of these measures, prospered beyond all imagination of our great ancestors. I therefore wish the Chairman's permission to warn the Union of excessive association with them."
Many have apostatized from the true and living faith because of this remark. It was indeed an unfortunate remark, made in the heat of a great war between Mare Tranquilitatis and the Confederate Peoples of the Lunar Equator. It could not have been inspired, for the deleterious effect it has had upon the true and living faith.
The present opinion of the Faithful Origins and Ontology League is that it is not sinful to associate with people of different hair colours, but it must be treated carefully. The Lunar Society of Friends has never discriminated against any person on the basis of his hair colour, and wishes to continue that pattern into the future indefinitely. It advises its members not to hate others because of their hair colour, but only to hate the sin of having red hair.

You can get stoned putting "synthetic dyes" in your hair???
I gotta start dying my hair!!! (Every evening I think.) I wonder if I have enough hair left to actually dye?

Re: You Can Keep Your Choir
OOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH! This explains so much about me. I have always felt like a recluse; an invert that takes comfort using some social media. Hmmmm, I was born a red-head. As I aged, it has faded until dark with gray. Is that because I have gained wisdom over the years? But wait. My body hair is still red red red. I'm so confused. So I am not hated, but the sin of red is what's hated. Thank you, thank you for 'splaining away my struggles with fitting in. I just knew it had nothing to do with my sparkling personality.LSOF wrote: ↑Tue Apr 04, 2017 11:22 am
