"The Light Has Gone From Your Eyes"

Post by Mormorrisey »

Yeah. I have officially achieved apostate status with this little gem.

I ran into a guy who currently sits on the high council, who was the EQP when I was the dude in charge; a clear ladder climber, who married into local Mormon royalty. At this stage, it's pretty clear to everyone in the stake that a former bishop is an apostate, without calling or status, and (I guess?? ) people are going to start and reactivate the lost spark?

If so, this is a really piss-poor way of going about it.

He asked about a prior job (lost it due to job cuts and a closed campus) and my current job (which I like and have a defined pension, so there's that) and this doofus starts pontificating that since I'm not teaching anymore, I'm "wasting my potential." Now as a backstory, not only did this guy marry into royalty, he also works for Daddy-in-law. I would ROUTINELY tell him to have more compassion for the less fortunate, and near the end of my tenure told him point-blank that not everyone has the benefit of marrying into a job, for others it's difficult to find one. So I just laughed, and told him academe jobs are not easy to get, especially in Canadian history, and I'm happy where I'm at.

Then, the famous "but the light has gone out of your eyes." I was a) happy I kept my temper and b) in a good mood, so I just laughed this off, and told him I was having the time of my life. No stupid meetings to go to, lots of time with the wife and family, and just living the high life. To me, living well is the best revenge, so keep thinking I'm miserable, when I'm literally the most relaxed and happy I've ever been, and my level of participation in church is exactly where I want it to be.

The only downside, as experienced by everybody, is that I thought of the best line when he left. That sure, the light has gone out of my eyes, because now my brain has been turned on, seen the church for what it is, a real estate conglomerate/collection agency, and I'll keep the lights out and the brain activated.

Yup, sometimes that light blinds you.

I usually reply "yeah, that's the boredom setting in...."

The worst part of this is that all of us could have pointed someone out and made the exact same comment. Another ward member or even a family member. One time my dad put a newspaper in front of me with two women on the cover. He asked, "which one is pro-life and which one is pro-choice?" I couldn't tell, and he then pointed out which one was missing the light from her eyes.

So stupid.

What a jerk! Tell you what, when I look around and see 300 bored faces in Sacrament Meeting, I don't see a lot of light in anybody's eyes.

Mormons like to flatter themselves that they have some kind of magical aura that makes them different than other people. There's no special light in any of their eyes and no special spirit they carry around that makes them seem any different - good people in the LDS Church are like good people anyway else, and as your encounter demonstrated, jerks in the LDS Church are like jerks anywhere else, although sometime with a touch more self-righteousness.

I actually do see light in many people's eyes during church. But it's from the reflection of their smart phones while they check Facebook and play games during sacrament meeting.

A fun test for this guy would be to take stock photos from the internet of happy people lined up side by side and ask the friend which ones have the gift of the holy ghost, then at the end after he makes the picks, show him that none were taken from the conference edition of the ensign. :)

Another response.

Ya I don't know about the light in my eyes thing. But I have noticed over time my skin has been getting darker. I have been putting sunblock everyday. I think god might be turning me into a laminite!

So I've been mentally out for a while but almost no one in my real life knows. My friend's mom is UBER UTAH TBM. I met her after I no longer believed. She ALWAYS raves on and on to her daughter about how wonderful I am, how she can feeeeel the spirit when she's with me and about the amazing light in my eyes. Always makes me laugh :)
