called to landscape

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

called to landscape

Post by Korihor »

I happened to drive by the Phoenix Temple this morning on my way to an appointment. I've lived here for just shy of 22 months and it was the first time I've seen it in person. It looks nice, like any temple and has appropriate landscaping to match its desert environment. I noticed 2 figures in the distance, as I neared them while driving down the road I realized they were raking the rocks and doing some landscaping maintenance.

Here's the kicker - it was 2 sister missionaries dressed in large dark blue coveralls with their name tags clipped above the left breast.

If that doesn't scream cult, I don't know what does. I had vivid flashbacks from last week's episode of The Path as I saw those poor girls slaving away. Nothing like leaving your life behind for 18 (24) months to go do some free hard labor in the desert for a wealthy corporation

I think in some cases I would have preferred rock raking to proselyting! :D

Seriously. We were always desperate for service opportunities and would have happily taken part in some landscaping!

One time I actually took advantage of the missionaries pleas for service opportunities and had them paint my fence...I'm no better than the church!!!
They didn't do a great job though. You get what you pay for.

I fully agree, it could be better than proselytizing. The sister missionaries came over last summer and help with some landscaping at our house. Chanelling my best John Dehlin voice - "They were super excited to come help us", and we had a nice afternoon with them, chatted and one of them just played with the kids so we could actually do some work.

However, my point above is that it was just the two of them, in drab dark blue jumpsuits doing manual labor at the temple grounds. The image was surreal to me. I bet they were content to be doing it, if they only were aware of their image.

Yeah it has that prison work release vibe to it.
