This could not have happened

Apart from the obvious reason, that it's mythology, this could not have happened. One of the few things we know about the gold plates it that they couldn't be seen by anyone (except in two specified and highly controlled circumstances) without someone's head melting. Yet, this seems to be the church's go-to way of depicting the translation, sometimes with a mysterious top hat lurking in the background.
“The easy confidence with which I know another man's religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also.” -Mark Twain

Jesus: "The Kingdom of God is within you." The Buddha: "Be your own light."

Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.
