I like this answer. More ways to share the money with their insiders while pretending the LDS church is growing and thriving.

Re: Mormon Milestones
~10 years on and those kids are thriving. Turns out it's completely possible to become an excellent human being without cult brainwashing - even in the Morridor. Who-da-thunk? The instilled fear is a real control tactic. I'm coming up on my ninth anniversary of the great shelf crash. So grateful ...

Re: Mormon Milestones
Congrats! Is there another tradition that you’ve replaced the priesthood ordination with? Like perhaps, ordaining him to master Jedi laser tag savant? Nothing that exciting. haha It was also middle school registration day so I took the day off work, took him out for a donut at his fave place this m ...

Mormon Milestones
Today is my youngest son's 12th birthday--the day he would have traditionally been "ready" to receive the priesthood. (Yeah, I know they changed all that for bureaucratic efficiency, but still a deeply engrained milestone) Feeling a little self-reflective as I think back on the alternate version of ...

Re: Recognized National Leader?
If there's one thing I know about Mormonism from living in "the mission field" for all my non-BYU years, it's that no one else thinks Mormons are nearly as important as Mormons think other people think Mormons are. They legit don't care about the LDS church except for as a weird pop culture ...
Re: Alcohol?
I drink like 10 cocktails a year while out with friends. Pretty sure my sweet tooth is a much bigger health risk for me.

100% related to polygamy. The LDS church has never actually abandoned polygamy--they just moved it to the afterlife.

Re: Where will you go?
When we first left the church, I made a concerted effort to take my family somewhere at least two Sundays a month--trips to the downtown library, the zoo, the art museum, new parks, the botanical gardens, the mural walk, new hiking trails, whatever. We still frequently go places on Sunday. things ...

I had no idea it had moved to a slideshow format years ago. I can't even believe they expect people to show up and watch the same PPT presentation over and over and over again. These people.
Posts like this always make me so happy that I am so clueless about what is happening in the Mormon world.

Re: Are Converts more likely to leave? If so, why?
My in-laws joined the church in their 20s. They had a lot of fighting and pressure with their own families over it. They're the least understanding of why we left, and the most focused people on fitting into the LDS social norm. It's all very odd to me because my parents were way more INTO Mormonism ...

I'd say i'm both an atheist and a humanist. People before fairy tales--especially the kind that incite people to hate other people because they don't all fit in the same small boxes.

Yikes. I would for sure be concerned about my relationship with my kids if they were afraid to tell me someone stole their laptop.
Ever notice how many of the "twist this into a heart-warming, religious lesson" stories are just so awful when you take away that lifeview?

I do work at a low-income minority serving institution, have some really brilliant students, and others the system has not served. If you don't have reliable internet or a working computer at home... covid hit some districts harder than others. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/act-college-admissions ...

Re: Does belief equal stupidity?
Interestingly enough as I look back, I do think Mormonism required me to (for lack of a better term) dumb down a lot of things about myself to stay active in it as long as I did. I have always been a very curious person who likes to learn new things, but the scope of what I delved into when I was a ...

Re: Should I tell her ?
I like all the comments about teling her basically that you are a soft place to land, if needed, and a source of support. It's a week before her mission. It's not the time to announce dramatic things. Hopefully, her mission will help her figure it out and then she will need support which you will be ...

Re: Setting and maintaining boundaries reduces anxiety
In Mormonism it is much more acceptable to say you will do something and then just don’t, than it is to just say, no, I can’t do that at this time. I remember when I fully realized this as an active Mormon. I would get so much pressure when I would say that I couldn't/wouldn't do something vs all th ...

Re: Setting and maintaining boundaries reduces anxiety
Mormonism can't coexist with healthy boundaries This is 100% true in my experience. I had done a lot of personal work on starting to set and make boundaries before I left Mormonism. It's hard when you are basically taught to be a doormat and manipulated from birth. Parl of my eventual shelf break ...

Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?
Absolutely, lots of trauma from being raised in a religion with a terribly unhealthy approach to mental health, relationships, boundaries, life expectations/choices, sexuality, autonomy, etc. etc. etc. I've worked through a lot of it over the last few years, but I know it still negatively impacts me ...

8. Not drinking hot chocolate because people might think it was coffee When I was a teenager, one of the SP members gave a whole talk about avoiding the appearance of evil, and the story he chose to share went something like this. He was at work, and it was very cold. He decided to get a hot ...
