Re: Mormons File Lawsuit Against Trump Travel Ban
It's not the church per se, but a group of LDS scholars and lawyers writing a "friend of the court" brief in support of stopping the ban. It's a strange thing to see many Mormons (not those filing this brief) support Trump and intolerance towards certain religions given their history. What short ...

The news article I saw said they were just not doing Varsity/Venture scouting anymore. Do you think this is a precursor to the church cutting off scouts completely?

Re: BYU Prof: People who leave Church deficient in "character"
Yeah, I saw that the other day and it's just another repetition of the church narrative: if you ever have a conflict with the church, the problem is you, not the church. Insulting to many of us, but not surprising.

Re: Was Joseph Smith martyred, murdered, or removed from his place?
The beauty of the question is that it identifies the three major philosophical groups. Well spotted. All three can be true depending on your point of view. I believe he was both #1 and #2 - the mob committed murder and that made him a martyr for the church. Many that identify with #2 or #3 are ...

I'm not disparaging you in any way, NOWmormon, but you are yet another in a long line of those who would like answers from the leadership of the church and I daresay you are just not going to get one. Demand all you want, but they have the power and have shown repeatedly their ability to ignore you ...

Sometimes a nice drive through the French countryside might be a pleasant thing, but I'm not sure about 8 hours :| . Anyway, thanks for the report and the comparison to the Versailles is an interesting thought. For those of us in Utah or whose lives are integrated around the church, the church can ...

Re: Upset by Elder Holland Story
I think I came to this conclusion before I left the LDS church, but basically (in LDS theology) you really can't count on God for anything. You can pray for safety, but if God needs you back in heaven, you're gone. You can ask about what job to take, but if God wants to teach you some kind of lesson ...

Re: 2017 General Conference Autopsy Report
Another theme is that there are no more miracles in the LDS Church. I must have missed that one. I guess I need to listen to the podcast. When the talks are quoted, it becomes pretty obvious. The only miracles you should expect today are either coincidences, medical procedures, meeting someone in ...

I agree - good stuff! This one was, IMO, particularly scathing in that the evidence of what they imply with every single story they bring up is in such stark contrast to what they claim is important, i.e., "family first." BULL S**T! Every story clearly says "CHURCH FIRST, and you'll like it!" The ...

Re: Talk Review: The Voice of Warning
I only listened to snippets of this talk from the Mormon Discussion podcast, but what I heard about the "shame" vs "guilt" culture made me want to laugh out loud. When he was describing the evil, worldly "shame" culture, I at first thought he was describing the church. It fit extremely well. Then he ...

Yes, I have. Often the reaction to a spouse's loss of faith is significant retrenchment, as if it's their job to make up for the spouse's weakness. Often that ends up softening because we tend to revert to the mean. What she did before is probably going to be the eventual standard (though there are ...

My uber-faithful in-laws were in town this past weekend and would firmly disagree with you. They spent some of their time watching videos from Wayne May and Rod Meldrum and are becoming strong proponents of the "Heartland" theory of Book of Mormon geography. Besides, the location of Nahom is a huge ...

Re: Next time an apologist throws the Bible under the bus...
Yeah, there's a big problem with false equivalency there. Sure, no one knows where the Garden of Eden was, as mentioned in the bible (i.e., nowhere - it's a myth). But there has yet to be a single identifiable place found that is mentioned in the BofM in the New World. Zero.
