Re: Wired to war?
Loved the movie. I think we are also wired for the opposite--risking our lives for total strangers (as well as animals). It swings both ways and we can also create cultures both ways too.

I know I don't come on here very often but this place and the people will always feel like home to me.

Re: What happened to the old NOM board?
It's hard to believe what LDSMan (blessed be his name) started and what so many others contributed along the way has continued this long!
Another sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed and made sacrifices for NOM 1.0 and 2.0.

Re: Changes I have seen. Does anyone agree?
The LDS Church has always evolved and changed over time and will continue to do so. I think I agree with most of the OP. The church is trying to align as much as possible with non-denominational/evangelical American Christianity IMO. I do think that YM and young adult males, from what I am aware of ...

Re: What happened to the old NOM board?
I have really fond feelings abut the old NOM board because it's where I first began to awaken and all the meaningful and great relationships I was able to make. I'm super happy that Corsair and everyone resurrected NOM. It's a great blessing. Seriously. It's good to be back. A huge THANK YOU!

Re: Fusion, salvation through science
It's a big advancement for humanity. I hope I can see it become applicable and pragmatic in my lifetime. Perhaps the "necessity" for it because of climate change will hasten it becoming usable in a cost effective way. Glad you posted about it. Hurray for science!!!

Re: How do you label yourself regarding your belief?
I'm spiritually fluid. On days when I feel a connection with a higher power it is definitely in the universalist ball park but with healthy skepticism. Some days I feel nothing and I'm in the agnostic/atheist ball park but also with healthy skepticism. I just don't really know and I don't think ...

Trump calling to terminate the US Constitution seems indicative of a smelly turd, that internet conservatives will embrace and defend. https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/03/politics/trump-constitution-truth-social/index.html This cult is so deep. He literally can say or do anything and people will follow ...

Re: Progressive mormonism
I think a part of the equation is your geography and perhaps the dominant political philosophy and culture of your area. Portland, Seattle, Manhattan, Boston, Hyde Park in Chicago, Sugar House in SLC are all progressive cultures which tend to promote more openness and flexibility and less of a ...

If they're going to make primary kids do that, I hope they at least allow them to color in the coloring book part of their quad: https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Flifeafter.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2013%2F09%2FFacsimile-3.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt ...

Re: Marking Scriptures In Class
Marking scriptures has a long tradition. I remember it most in seminary with scripture mastery. On my mission, I had color coding based on connecting certain scriptures to certain discussions we would teach. It's usually a way of proof texting in religion. It can be worthwhile when it is based on ...

Re: Club-Q shooter was not an ACTIVE Mormon
No doubt the Church helped with his formative homophobia. Sounds like he was following Elder Holland's pleading to discharge his musket fire. Take the man out of Mormonism, but not the Mormonism out of the man, I immediately thought of Holland's musket fire talk as well when I heard about this. I ...

Re: Progressive mormonism
I think there are niches within the LDS church where you can be a progressive Mormon. I did it for about 10-11 years or so. I think you can make fleeting changes to the culture of the church on the local/micro level depending on your leadership and where you live. However, I think some places and ...

Re: Church supports marriage equality
One of the only things that is noteworthy here IMO is that the religious coalition of the Prop 8 era has fragmented. The Catholic church did not support this bill (and they are not some little backwater snake handling cult). I think this is a shrewd move by the church. They get some good PR ...

Re: Election day
I get really discouraged about the state of our country but there are some bright spots. Overall, the red wave failed and that actually is historic in a midterm where the President's party usually does quite badly. Certainly in deep red states like Idaho and Utah it is going to be much more ...

Aligning with this thread, I watched a Hulu Documentary called "God Forbid" about the downfall of Jerry Falwell Jr. and the power and influence he had as President of Liberty University. It shows the absolute hypocrisy and the utter thirst for power.

Stealth, your participation here at NOM all these years has been invaluable to so many of us. I always feel a sense of loss when posters move on and stop participating. I felt that for the short time you were away only to find a sense of happiness and joy when you came back! Especially with the ...
