Re: Prosperity Gospel Condemned by Vatican
During the peak of my faith crisis, I noted that the BoM says specifically that those who keep the commandments of God will prosper in the land SIX TIMES. Over and over and over. And it’s the discovery that it was patently false was a big help in my mental departure.

Re: The New Elders Quorum
I’m not having a very I’m good experience with it yet. But, it does take some time to adjust to having a whole new group of people in your quorum. Overall, I’m just not seeing it as being much better, if at all. CERTAINLY not “revelation”.

Had a mind-bending talk with DD last night
My 21-year old exmo DD was telling me, after a couple hours of discussing the damage the church did to us as a family over the years, more about herself. She told me that her “first kiss” was with a girl! I said, “if this was 6 months ago, I would have been devastated and wondering where I went wrong ...

Reading r/exmormon during stake conference
DW is at a convention so I’m here with the boys myself, reading Reddit and enjoying the discussions there FAR more than the diahhrea of the mouth crap that the new stake presidency is spewing out of their mouths. Makes me want to thrust all of it out my velvet bunghole for good. We sang “We Thank the ...

Re: Would you consider an LDS-lover again?
I have thought about it, if it ever got so bad that divorce was the option. Fortunately nowhere near that. But, I concluded that I probably would look outside the church. NOM-ish is good, though.

Re: Recognizing supportive spouses
Here are the things I love about how my TBM DW has handled the "situation": - Even though she said she wants to punch me in the face, she has given me plenty of space and time to think and process what I'm going through. - She has agreed with many of the issues I have with church culture and how it ...

Re: Consistently Confused
It's great to finally meet you! I was in a fortunate position to stumble upon this group before my shelf completely broke, but it was bending for a long time. For me, the NOM slogan, "A place for free-thinking Mormons who refuse to be told what to believe" became real when I decided that I was 100 ...

Well, I took Oliver up and downloaded The Righteous Mind. Listened maybe 30 minutes but really loving it already! Thanks for all the suggestions!

Aaaaahhh!!!! I needed a laugh like that (and I give wtfluff +1 for the NOTACOLT image). Seriously, a little laughter goes a long way. I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere about Red Ryder's BB gun too...

What if...(Savannah the sweet lesbian girl)
I was recently just thinking about Savannah, the girl who's mic was shut off by the bishop after bearing her testimony that she was a lesbian. NY Times article: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/22/us/mormon-girl-gay-speech.html Note her saying, "I felt like they were scared of me and what I was ...

Re: "If you read the BoM, your babies will cry less"
Should we just let this pass as youthful exuberance from this young sister missionary? Unfortunately, that is exactly what happens: she gets a pass because we all know that we hear this kind of stuff every week and I'm sure each of those types of statements end up on somebody's shelf, and the rest ...

Re: I'm Tired
I think most of us are tired from the painful and gut-wrenching, but beautiful, compassionate, truthful, and unbelievably liberating new world view that our perspective affords. It's living a dichotomy every day, and it's mental stretching and relationship-testing that cuts to the very core.

Re: "If you read the BoM, your babies will cry less"
No matter what anyone tells you, every mormon is a cafeteria mormon. Yep. But, only people like us get the Official Label. And, while we teach that we must live by faith, unfortunately in the church "faith" means "I know". If you don't "know", well, that could be a problem.

Lol, I just saw the sticky post titled "Recommended Reading List". Why wasn't I led to that post earlier? Oh yeah, I'm not that righteous.

Welcome! I'm new here too, and feel your pain acutely. How long ago did your shelf break? And how long after that did you stop going to church? One thing that has really helped me is the frequent advice to TAKE IT SLOW. I was very fortunate to stumble upon this site and StayLDS very early on after ...

Re: "If you read the BoM, your babies will cry less"
Yes, it does seem like we in the same boat. Thanks for sharing. In one of our discussions, DW mentioned that "she didn't care" about the issues. Of course, most of us in this forum used to feel that way to some degree at some point, so can empathize with that position. We know the pain that comes ...

Also, I don't want to give the impression that my wife is ready to crack. She actually said the other day that she wanted to punch me in the face for all this. And, I got Tad Callister's apologetic BoM conference talk in my inbox yesterday.

"If you read the BoM, your babies will cry less"
One of the sister missionaries spoke in SM last week, and was gushing about how the BoM will change your life. At one point, she emphatically promised, "If you read every single day, I promise you that your life will get better. Everything will get better, even your babies will cry less!" I ...
