Re: So, why did Jesus have to die?
Sometimes these discussions feel like a Marvel movie. You have an in universe explanation and a meta explanation. I've thought about the atonement as you have, and have never been able to come up with a theological argument for why Jesus' death and suffering was necessary to the process. It make ...

Re: New marketing manual from dear leader
Great. I wonder whether they'll abandon reading general conference talks one paragraph at a time so they can read the new preach my gospel one paragraph at a time during EQ and RS next year. Because people are leaving and they're leaving because they don't know the basics... the same basics that ...

Re: Anti-Catholic Litertature Wanted
If academic history is anti-Mormon, then I imagine the same sort of stuff would pass as anti-Catholic. The difference you'll find is that Catholicism has moved past the stage where academics is considered a threat. Yes, you'll have very conservative traditions within the church that will decry ...

Re: Question about LDS Church
I think the leaders would say they do, but give the resources at their disposal their actions do not indicate such A part of the difficulty in communicating these days is the presence of so much doublespeak that's impossible to have an un-muddied conversation. The Sophists used to teach rhetoric ...

Re: Why are callings kept 'secret' until announced?
I was executive secretary for a few years so I saw this in action a bit. One of the biggest surprises was how many callings don't work out. Sometimes members would turn them down, other times something else would open up (usually due to someone moving) and they would want to change a unsustained ...

Re: Gina Colvin called for disciplinary council
Why does the handbook make such a big deal out of joining another denomination? If they don't believe other churches have authority, then it's just for show, and if they were to show love instead of petty indignation, then maybe people would decide to come back. This whole disciplinary thing is very ...

The problem of evil and the name of the church
Full disclosure, the only conference I engaged with this weekend was the summary page for each session on the Salt Lake Tribune. Still, it was enough to bring back the memory of what first caused me to question the church. I say question the church and not my faith, but cause questioning faith came ...

I'm not sure if they will come after me too (because my name is public) but if they do then I will use the awareness to bring light, as Sam did, to these sexually inappropriate and explicit one-on-one interviews that have damaged so many children and adults of our people. It's good to be back in ...

Re: Russell M Nelson - God's Conditional Love
There are several in the leading quorums who have a real ax grind when it comes to the love of God. On one hand, they want to say that God loves all his children, but on the other, they are so afraid that people will think they don't have to be obedient. I think it comes down to D&C 19. Martin ...

I love that the first major media story since Nelson's style guide revelation refers to Sam as a Mormon Bishop. https://www.newsweek.com/mormon-bishop-sam-young-excommunication-sexually-explicit-children-interviews-1096856 And the only reason this is being picked up by a big news outlet is because ...

Polygamy: Both here and in the "afterlife", it just doesn't add up in more than one way. Unless you maintain the gender stereotype that women are more righteous, pure, simple, and therefore less accountable for certain sins. Then you can imagine yourself a heaven where women outnumber the men 20 to ...

Coming home is a frightening experience because it's the first time these kids get to make their own decisions. The need for normality was important for me. I just wanted something solid and secure. I wasn't able to break out of missionary mode until I had a plan and felt safe in my new life.

Did you read about the example he gave of Mary Anne Sause? What happened is they came to her house because of a noise complaint and then ...

However, I tend to take that with a major grain of salt. When my dad researches family history, he seems to link to the most interesting possible ancestor, not the most likely. So I think there is very high likelihood of error in that family tree. That does bring up concerns with this whole amature ...
