Re: Senior Mission Pressure
Senior missions are quite expensive. I know many older couples who can't afford a mission, though they want to go. So pushing senior missions sounds elitist. Also a way to shame people who don't have a very comfortable retirement lined up.

To add insult to injury, the bishop told her the perp was truly sorry and was preparing for an upcoming temple wedding. WTH?

And what about cold brewed coffee? The whole process uses no heat at all.

Re: Impractical, uncomfortable, and unsightly
I still maintain that garments are the single dumbest idea Smith ever had. I can't wrap my mind around how anyone takes them seriously, including myself a few years ago. Especially given the origins started with a frontier sex cult! I'm considering starting a campaign similar to Ordain Women or Sam ...

Re: The Big Bang: Cosmological Discussion with My Parents
My dad thinks genesis 1 describes the 'creation' of the solar system. His theory solves problematic issues like preexisting stars and the time it takes for their light to reach earth. I used to try to reconcile science and religion, but it takes too much effort. I too am fascinated by cosmology and ...

Re: Beliefs influencing major life decisions
That was such a hard thing to go through, whatififly, and I think it's terrible that the church ruins lives this way. I too made bad decisions in an attempt to follow church counsel. I actually did what I wanted as a young adult but then decided to get with the program when I got a little older. My ...

Women should submit to their husbands. Now the FamProc says parents work together as equals (I don't remember the exact wording). But fathers still "preside".

I lived in Europe after graduating from college through a worker exchange program. Living and working overseas is an great learning experience. My experience helped me get beyond an amerocentric world view.

Re: DW hasn't been paying tithing
I've been still paying on surplus on the income I bring in for a few years now. DW didn't like it at first, said I wasn't worthy of the temple, etc. but she seems to accept it now. She has been paying 10% of net on her income, although she hasn't paid any tithing for 9 months. I was just doing our ...

Re: How and When did Church take over your "self"
The church took over my "self" by teaching me that I could never be good enough. As a teen, I would think about my future, but then remember that I had to have a lot of kids if I wanted to be good enough. It was a depressing thought. Later in life whenever I accomplished something I would have a ...

Re: What was / is your purpose in being part of the church?
I'm happy to report that they all left the church. They left before I did, which caused some family turmoil at the time. One kid left shortly before his Eagle board of review so the board, all mormon, flunked him. He appealed it and after a lot of drama he got his Eagle. But by leaving the church my ...

Re: What was / is your purpose in being part of the church?
No I'm not in counseling, all this happened many years ago and I've worked out a lot of stuff on my own. You're right about the church appealing to people going through hard times. There's no way I would have gone back otherwise. I just regret the lost decades, missed opportunities and problems ...

Re: What was / is your purpose in being part of the church?
I grew up in South Texas. After college I moved far away from family and friends, broke up with my boyfriend and felt completely lost after college. I was lonely, probably depressed and wasn't even sure I wanted a career in the field I had just gotten a B.S. in. So I went back to church because that ...

Re: What was / is your purpose in being part of the church?
I was born into the church, though according to the map I should have been Roman Catholic. I'm actually thankful for participating in Primary and YW. School was an abusive hellhole for me, I belonged to the untouchable caste. At church, though, the kids were nice to me and included me. I wouldn't ...
