Re: Ed Smart comes out as gay
It has been a long time since I commented on the site but I do check in from time to time. Thanks to everyone for keeping me up-to-date on what is happening - it helps me understand what my family is talking about. I can't let this story go by without comment. It is horrifying to me that news ...

Re: How to get out of cleaning the church...
I concur with slavereeno and oliver. As a teenager, I lived in a ward where there were two church employees who were custodians in our stake. They were both good men and had experienced challenges in their lives. They took great pride in their work and in providing for their families. I think as a ...

Just to close the loop - I received my gift card by email. What should I do with $7.66 CDN? I'm open to suggestions.

Re: Just received 'Correlation Research Department Survey'
Careful, the question about what religion you belong to is a trap. If you answer some denomination other than LDS that would be admitting to an excommunicable offense. I received one of these emails very shortly after instructing my bishop to put me on the "Do Not Contact" list. I think disaffected ...

Re: Non-Consensual Immorality
It has been months since I posted anything on NOM - I thought I had worked my way past my issues with Mormonism. And then.... so many stories surfacing lately about how thoughtlessly women and others without power in the Church are treated. I chalk "non-consensual immorality" up to thoughtlessness ...

Re: New Ministering Program
Ugh - I hope this doesn't mean we get more visits. Every three months we get an unscheduled "visit". Brother M rings our doorbell and then pounds on the door for five minutes. DH and I just sit and wait for him to go away while the dog barks at him. The RS has left me alone for nearly 2 years and HT ...

I need to leave this here in honor of Elder Anderson's talk. https://i.redd.it/oeuw874j8gb01.jpg Wow that looks extremely helpful, when did they install that? Snazzy looking too. Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk AMAZING! It would be even better if it displayed the NOM scores too!

Re: Our next 1978 moment?
The way the Church transfers (funnels? diverts? plunders? struggling to find the right word) from Canada to BYU is a sore point for me. How's this for the "right words": BYU is the money laundering division of LDS-Inc. Isn't there literally some sort of law in Canadia that says religions ...

Re: Our next 1978 moment?
I wonder if BYU takes in Title IX funds? It seems the Church is well funded enough that they could restructure so that they didn’t have to rely on any federal money. Perhaps the tithing dollars of a small country like Canada could be diverted to fund BYU. I’ll do some digging. Already is . Look at t ...

Re: Just received 'Correlation Research Department Survey'
So how many tithing dollars are used for Amazon gift cards sent to survey responders? They may be farming this type of stuff out to a "Survey" or PR firm, who is then purchasing the gift cards... Either way, it's Your Tithing Dollars at work. I filled out the survey and am waiting for my ...

Thanks NOMelganger. I am a political junkie and follow the news in the US very closely. This was really what surprised me most last week .... and it was a week with a lot of surprises! :o My next question is - how big a movement is this within the church? Will it shake people to the leave the same ...

How prevalent is this....?
I haven't been to Church in 3 years and I'm not in the MorCor or in the US so this article caught me off-guard: http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2017/08/18/the_mormon_church_condemned_white_supremacists_and_this_mormon_white_supremacist.html Not sure why I was surprised given the long ...

Re: Religion's Vital Role? What About the LDS Role?
2. In the United States, our enormous private sector of charitable works—education, hospitals, care for the poor, and countless other charities of great value—originated with and is still sponsored most significantly by religious organizations and religious impulses. How much of that enormous pri ...

Re: The Church as aGatekeeper
I'm so sorry. when I was a young bride I didn't think about what it meant for my father to be standing outside the gates when I got married - that's just the way it was. My younger sister got married at a winery last year and my father was so thrilled to be able to attend one of his daughter's ...

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #8
Ditto. I also don't think that 8 year olds can enter into eternally binding covenants. And promises made in the temple aren't exactly made with full and complete information nor in an environment where you really have the opportunity to consider and weigh your commitment. There's enough time for ...

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #10 (percent)
I paid tithing on my gross my whole adult life. I think that means DH and I have prepaid until the end of time. So, no - we do not currently pay tithing to an organization that we do not believe in any longer. Out of curiosity, I took a look back through my checkbooks and tithing receipts to see ...
