Re: Best possible relationship between TBM parents and apostate child?
Unless they are abusive, my opinion is that family is a net benefit. I've been out four years, and those years have been quite rough in the family of origin reactions. But we all just keep showing up, and that has come to mean so much to me. Time is a true healer, as long as you keep showing up. A ...

Re: Being a NOM pisses me off. What do I do?
I was a bandaid-ripper, and it can work if you and your spouse are truly united. My advice is to not get into your issues about the church with TBM's. You don't need to make a big social media announcement. Go quietly and deal with people in clusters (ie family) or one-on-one. And be ready to face a ...

Re: Making sense of "spiritual" experiences
The most potent spiritual experience I ever had was in a Christian church many months after I quit the LDS faith. Bear with me because I am well-aware of how weird this will sound. Several coincidental alignments happened within a couple of days, as if something supernatural was trying to get ...

Re: Authenticity
What if we replace the word authentic with the word genuine? Can you always be genuine without letting it all hang out 100% of the time? I think that is both possible and admirable. You owe it to your peace of mind to have boundaries with people, and imho that means sharing wisely. I like what Brene ...

Re: Is belief a choice?
Maybe it depends on an individual's ability to suspend disbelief, and to compartmentalize out of primal fear. I wanted to believe for a long time, and ignored red flags. It was comforting to believe, and it was the only way I knew how to live. I reached a point where I couldn't believe even though I ...

Re: Honoring Belief
My family has adjusted to accept the new me, even if it did take a few years. In return, I have learned to support them in the positive aspects of their faith. I want them to be happy, and I want to minimize unproductive conflict. Lately, I have even been approached for advice, which had completely ...

Re: Trying to Get a New Monson Obituary Written by NYT
Here is an article that intelligently evaluates a possible reason for the LDS reaction to the Times obit:

Re: Trying to Get a New Monson Obituary Written by NYT
I agree the NYT obituaries are fair, factual, secular takes on the public lives and leadership of notable individuals. You're right. I think my initial reaction was to how the Times tweeted a summary and the link. I saw the negative slant as disrespectful. I'm not going to search and post it. You ...

Re: Trying to Get a New Monson Obituary Written by NYT
In comparison to the other "obits" it runs on notable deaths, I found the tone of Monson's deeply disrespectful.

Re: Letter to Bishop
I did something similar with my dearest local LDS friend. It was hard, but the right choice. We are still good friends, years later. I'm happy for you, and hope you get the support and compassion you deserve.

Lucy Honeychurch
Hello. I am a long-time lurker who was a briefly interactive (under a different name) at the old site when my family and I left the LDS church in 2014. I spent my whole life as a happy and faithful Mormon until 2010, when some of my questions demanded answers, and I started to search. I read more in ...
