Re: A quick update
Hey RR, Contrats on your new position (despite the tradeoffs, as you mentioned) and on the progress you and your wife have made together! I heartily endorse your high opinion of the 'At last she said it' podcast. I absolutely love it and have listened to nearly every episode. They are the perfect ...

Re: Slowly fading away? The future of NOM?
Hey everyone, Guilty as charged. :D I've been on NOM for probably 12 years and 99.9% of the time I lurk. I really love this place and it feels safe and homey and I (perhaps weirdly) feel like I actually know some of you frequent posters. There are a few reasons why I don't post often: * I'm ...

Re: 22 Months Down. 38 To Go.
Love to hear from you Bishop. Why do you suppose so many people are needy? (Not always financially) It seems like the church wants people to be self efficient, yet at the same time wants them to be completely dependent on the church. I agree! the church wants you to be completely dependent on them ...

Re: Temple attendance, temple recommend, temple, temple temple!
Hi cpy911, I don't have any profound advice for you, but I extend to you my heartfelt sympathy. The temple is a difficult topic for many of us. My DD was married last year and I stayed outside the temple with all the little kids while everyone else was inside. I remember the during the week before ...

Re: The watering down of what is revelation
AdmiralHoldo beat me to it, but i was going to add 'miracles' to revelation as something that has become so watered down as to become meaningless. I have several relatives who have recently or are now serving missions. The frequency with which they describe mundane events as miracles boggles my mind ...

Re: YW General President's Misleading Faith Promoting Experience of Her Toddler Grandson's Death
Even if she didn't know the full circumstances the first time she shared this faith promoting story, she certainly would have found out a short time later. These events happened in 2017. I don't know what excuse there is. this is bad PR, now that mormondiscussions has brought this to light. Let's ...

Re: child's baptism -- help
Seeing as you are already out to your bishop, talk it over with him. Often they will let a less than perfect in the eyes of the church do the baptism. The main thing is, make sure your kid feels special. I didn’t care that my dad wasn’t going to baptist me because my grandfather baptized my older br ...

Re: child's baptism -- help
Life will go on whether you baptize the child or not. Talk to the bishop, if they are a decent person then they will help make this happen. If you can do the baptism, you might as well grin and bear it. If they are not, you can explain it to your child when he is a bit older. Just because children ...

Nice! how did it go when you tried this? This statement came right after my post, so I'll assume this question is pointing at me. My pool scenario is just that: A scenario. Not my experience, but I have a friend who has wanted to do something like I mentioned. It hasn't worked out so far and ...

Re: child's baptism -- help
I baptized my last kid 10 years ago. It was literally a month after they changed the rules where you need the Temple Recommend to do the confirmation. I wasn’t fully out yet to family and my bishop wouldn’t budge on the rule change. He merely suggested I renew my recommend. I had not paid tithing in ...

Thanks Linked for your reply. It helps to know other have successfully navigated this conundrum. I'm glad it worked out well for you, and that your TBM DW was on board. As i mentioned in my OP that is a little bit of a delicate topic for us. I agree that the way the church has set things up, it ...

child's baptism -- help
Hello everyone, I have a child turning 8 in the near future. Whether or not I baptize him (or am even allowed to) is causing me a lot of stress. My situation -- i have not not believed for many years, have not had a recommend for a while now, and I do not pay tithing. Other than that I fully ...

Re: 17 new temples?
Regarding the real estate aspect, I have to wonder how much value added a temple gives to a property. I mean, it's such a specific structure type, I'm not sure what a 3rd party would do with it in the situation where they bought it from the church.

Totally agree with RR that we need to hear stories like yours!
We all like (or would have liked) to be treated gently and with understanding in our faith transitions, so glad you can provide that for your DW.

Re: Back again for another push
Like Red Ryder, I too feel like i have been you as well, and in many ways still are. I totally get the difficulty of shedding the conditioning we've experienced at the hands of the church. That we should relinquish our internal authority to external sources. That the church knows better than we do ...

Re: Why Strict Religions Succeed
This video is also making me think of how the church manages its self image. One one hand, over the past few decades it has really waned to be accepted by the wider christian world. But at the same time it really doesn't want to give up what makes it unique -- the things that serve as its in-group ...

Re: Why Strict Religions Succeed
Fascinating and well done video. I appreciate that he's making his observations from an objective view and he's not passing judgement one way or the other. I have been noticing lately how Mormonism creates the in-group out-group by creating an alternative and exclusive 'normal'. By that I mean ...

Re: disaffection and health
Appreciate everyone's thoughtful comments. I agree that both people and purpose are critical. I was surprised by what the podcast claimed -- that purpose is even more important. I'm not sure I agree with that, since they seem pretty co-equal to me. I think there are a couple of layers to purpose ...
