Re: 9 stories from those who returned to the faith
Put up or shut up Liahona. If you aren't going to provide details about exactly what the concerns were that caused them to leave and exactly why those things shouldn't be concerning, then your article serves no purpose other than providing misleading and false reassurance for people who don't know ...

Re: Replacing the New Order Mormon
I was active on NOM for a long, long time - under a different username for many years, and then after doxxing myself like an idiot one Halloween unmasking, in 2016 had to switch to my present username. When I first joined NOM, the "middle way" really was the ethos. I was perhaps not as patient with ...

Re: Tithing Unsettlement
I always kind of assumed the SEC problems were only a concern for ex-Mormons, most members don't seem to be real shook up by anything. Perhaps I was wrong. Or perhaps these are members who were questioning anyway. For most members it seems like whatever shield they have up to protect their belief is ...

Re: Non-Partisan history is more interesting.
Being a history buff, I pay special attention to other history buffs. We are weird, nerdy, and often snobbish. We are also often partisan to a particular view. Civil War history buffs can be interesting, but if they are partisan to one side or the other, they can also be a pain in the tush. A ...

Re: A Uchtdorf rise to the Prophetic throne is reasonable.
As much as I liked Pres Hinkley, I groaned when he opined about the ear rings and tattoos. He probably wished he could have taken that back, but who knows. It was a way that TBMs placed a mark on others for rebellion, and it was wrong to do that. Hinckley really rode that folksy grandpa persona and ...

Re: Anybody know anything about Patrick Kearon? New Apostle
I get why PIMO members hope for change with any new apostle who seems less extreme than the rest. When I was stuck in the Church, I was hopeful for anything that would make it more bearable. But even so, I never bought into the idea that President Uchtdorf would be an agent for change - I will ...

Re: Joseph Smith “sexual predator” label?
Clearly a predator. Women weren't throwing themselves at him - he was approaching them . Much like wildebeest don't seek out lions, these vulnerable underage girls weren't seeking Joseph for sexual encounters - in each and every case, he approached them in what is best described as a predatory ...

Re: Mormonism unchecked
Surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this post. We already know what it would have been like - Utah from about 1847 to about 1857. Brigham Young had total control over everything - church, government, society. Most dictators rule with mere force - Brigham had the perception of divine ...

Re: What happened to the old NOM board?
I do think the old Board had a lot more people who knew there were problems in the Church but wanted to make it work. It was interesting over time to watch a shift from a lot of people who wanted to stay in the Church and knew there were problems to a lot of people who wanted out and were just ...

Re: Changes I have seen. Does anyone agree?
The thing that I've noticed is how they "dumb down" things. Started with having the whole world suffer through Gospel Essentials in Sunday School, which is when I stopped attending Sunday School. For crying out loud- many of us have taught that class, some many times. To get it spoon fed to us like ...

Yes, many thanks to those of you responsible for bringing NOM back.
I never had any hard feelings toward Thayne when the old Board died - he never owed us anything. We should be grateful for what he did, I personally didn't like some of the complaining I saw at the time.

Re: Does belief equal stupidity?
Michael Shermer - whose problematic behavior I am not condoning or excusing in referencing him - once wrote a book called "Why People Believe Weird Things". It had a chapter called "Why Smart People Believe Weird Things", and he suggested an idea that has always stuck with me - smart people are good ...

Re: Election day
Is anyone as discouraged about the election and the state of the country as I am? I vote in Idaho, where voting for a sensible candidate is really swimming up stream….rather up waterfall. There are “Trump 24” flags and “F* Biden”flags all over. There are serious threats to throw out all mail in vote ...

Re: Church of the Far-Right
The people in the video aren't what's scary. There are relatively few of them. What's scary is the greater number of normal people who are supporting that with their votes. The extremists in the video wouldn't have any power if it weren't for the normal people who give it to them.

Re: Are there no GenCon rumor this time around?
Without question, there will be references to Satan's attacks on the Church through unflattering and inaccurate portrayals of the Church in entertainment. They'll call out Under the Banner of Heaven and Sins of the Mother obliquely in ways that send the message without explicitly stating which shows ...

Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?
Mormonism traumatizes everyone it touches, whether they realize it or not. Even believing members who think the Church makes them happy have to deal with the oppressive demands of a manipulative, dissembling, uptight Church that demands their unquestioning fealty, and even those members must vainly ...

Re: Oaks vows BYU will not be part of "the World"
Side note: The church has blabbed about "confidential" information plenty. Ever tell your bishop something and next time you see your Stake President he asks you about the thing you told your bishop? Oops. That happened to me- twice. Lesson learned. Yeah, don't ever confess anything to anybody in ...

Re: YW General President's Misleading Faith Promoting Experience of Her Toddler Grandson's Death
I have thought about it that way too but for her to share this story so often in public is such a risk. Does she not know that there is a public record of the circumstances of her grandson's death?! There seems to be a tradition of just accepting what is said in a formal church setting as truth. It ...

I think you are overthinking it. You don't owe them an explanation. Anything you give them after "no" is just you being nice.

Re: YW General President's Misleading Faith Promoting Experience of Her Toddler Grandson's Death
While I sympathize for any grandmother who loses a grandson like that, it is nothing short of bizarre the way that Bonnie Cordon keeps telling the story publicly and leaving the details out. In one telling she told about them trying to take the empty carseat back on the plane and getting a hard time ...
